Domestic project:

South Adriatic 1 – Chemical investigation of Sea water, Sediments and Biota (JJ-1)
Project leader:
Ph D Zoran Kljajić

  • The general goal is seasonably determination of basic physical-chemical parameters of sea water in terms of harmonizing the quality control system of human environment in the coastal area of Montenegro and assessing the environmental status of that areas.

  • The project is scheduled the physical and chemical analysis of sea water, sediments and biota in the area of the southern Adriatic. In addition to the wider area of the southern Adriatic coast (including the epicontinental shelf), the project is specifically focused on the area of the territorial sea of Montenegro. This, among other things, includes standardization of sampling for chemical analysis by methodology that is recognized in the world (Med POL methodology) and the use of modern oceanography instrumentation. By using the highly-sensitive techniques for examination of heavy metals ( X-Ray Fluorescence method and AAS) and other spectrophotometri  techniques it will be determined the content of toxic heavy metals in sediments and biota (algae Cystoseira sp., Mussels Mytilus sp.) on pre-defined positions in southern Adriatic. This provides an opportunity for long-term assessment of the distribution, movement and influence of these pollutants in the sediment on the eco-system of the examined areas.

  • The project includes the establishment and expansion of international inter-institute cooperation with the maritime border states (Italy, Croatia, Albania), the exchange of results, and organization of the scientific gatherings and conferences.

  • The time required for the realization of the project is 3 years.

International projects:

ADRICOSM-STAR

ADRIatic sea Integrated COastal areaS and river basin Management system:

Montenegro coaSTal ARea and Bojana river catchment

The overall project objective is to study the water cycle of the Montenegro area at large, implement monitoring systems and modeling tools, and assess the impact of climate change on the water cycle and material transports of the area. The area of investigation is the Bojana River Delta and the whole Montenegro Adriatic coast, taking into consideration Albanian tributaries and Albanian marine waters influence (fig 1). More…
