ADRICOSM-STAR configures itself as a component of the ADRICOSM Partnership which focus is on multinational research, its organization and coordination, development and implementation of programs that advance monitoring and predictive capabilities in the Adriatic Sea area in order to establish the integrated coastal areas and river basin management systems, as well as on the consolidation the monitoring and prediction system by involving users of the research products.

On the basis of major environmental problems of interest the project deals with four environmental compartments: atmosphere-climate (in particular for the large Montenegro atmospheric area), oceanography (for the Montenegro and Albanian coastal areas) hydrology (for the Bojana river and the Delta area with consideration of the Albanian affluent), urban waters( for the town of Ulcinj).

The Project specific objectives are:

  1. Continue and further develop the ADRICOSM forecasting system for the Adriatic Sea and its coastal areas with particular emphasis for the Montenegro coastal area.

  2. Design and partially implement a monitoring system for the surface water cycle, the river runoff and the coastal area of Montenegro

  3. Develop and validate modeling tools for the urban, surface, underground water and coastal currents in the Bojana river catchments and Montenegro coastal area, considering the transboundary nature of the system

  4. Develop a short term (several days) forecasting capability for hydrology, coastal currents and river basin runoff

  5. Produce IPCC climate change scenario impact studies for the next decades in connection with the water and sediment quality in the Bojana River and the Montenegro coastal area

The project is subdivided into nine work packages which are included within four project modules. The ADRICOSM-STAR involves 19 public and private partners from Italy, Montenegro, Serbia and Albania. The coordinating Institution is the Centro Euro-Mediterraneo per i Cambiamenti Climatici (CMCC) and the scientific coordinator is Prof. Nadia Pinardi of INGV and University of Bologna.

Institute of Marine Biology in Kotor is responsible partner for WP2- Data collection program for model calibration/validation and monitoring upgrades, also as a participant partner for some tasks from other work packages. Scientific Coordinator for effective Project implementation is Dr. Zoran Kljajic. Read more – geoportal

The project has duration of 3 years starting from March 2007. The first year of project has finished and all the predefined goals have been achieved.
